Spotlights vs Ceiling lights: What's the Difference Anyway?

Aug 19,2022 | CANMEILIGHTS

Lighting is an essential part of the house, which has a great impact on the living experience and has a great impact on the presentation of the decoration and furniture effects.

Generally speaking, many people are used to ceiling lights in the living room, and bedroom, without overhead lights they think that you'll never be able to properly light it. That couldn't be further from the truth – with lights designed for rooms without ceiling lights, you can completely reinvent your room's aesthetic and have more control over its mood and decoration.

It's your home? Many people need ceiling lights to lighten the whole space.

Actually, this design is so simple that does not reflect the beauty of the space well, no ceiling lighting is the popular lighting design concept today.

Literally, ceiling light lighting, which is abandoning the chandelier, the ceiling lamp is) all illuminated form of lighting changed to regional focus lighting, where need to light, there has light.

Following is the form of lighting without the overhead light, many public places have used this way to achieve a certain area of illumination, both energy-saving and beautiful.

Expect public areas, there also have some excellent no overhead cases in private residential spaces.

This case is an example of strip lighting. The light diffused from the strip is very soft, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

A wide range of strip base lighting can create a very smooth environment, however, different activities in the space require different levels of illumination, sometimes, it is necessary to add some spotlights to supplement the area of frequent activities. For example, when you need to read a book, the base illumination may not be enough, then you need to turn on a spotlight in the location where you are reading.

Using spotlight as the main lighting will add some layered, and make your rooms more attractive, you can choose the lighting atmosphere base on your preference.

The following case is also very interesting, which is a very advanced lighting treatment. The two chandeliers above the billiard table assume a certain decorative role. The lighting is scattered to various locations, lighting only exists in need.

We have shared some no overhead lighting cases, the next paragraph, we will tell you how to design the no overhead lighting.

When we talk about the no overhead lighting, which references one of the most basic and central formulas.

Eav= N*Ф / Area(m²)

The pro formulas: Eav = N*Ф*CU*MF / Area(㎡)

Eav: average illuminance

It means the illumination (light intensity) is needed for the space. However, different spaces have different needs, for example, office space may need more and a bedroom may need less.

Different spaces have a corresponding reference, when we design the lighting, we should set a range of illumination according to the needs of the space.

For example, when we are in the living room, we usually see a film, take a break and chat with friends.

When we see a film or do other quieter activities, low demand for brightness only needs regional accent lighting. We suggest set: 80-100lx

Take a break: A family sitting together will have their different activities that require basic lighting to hit the ground running. We suggest set: 150-200lx

chat with friends: when your friends take a visit for you or do some lively activities, We suggest setting: 250lx

N*Ф: Total luminous flux of the light source

The total luminous flux of the light source means the Brightness of the luminaire. Professional luminaires will provide luminous flux data, where the unit of lm this value is the luminous flux, the total luminous flux is the number of different lamps *, and then all add up to the total luminous flux.

Luminous flux and wattage have a direct relationship,  the greater the wattage the greater the luminous flux, but different lamps and lanterns will not be the same, you can understand it as the same wattage, the better the luminous flux of the lamps and lanterns.

For example dining area: 7.8m2, total luminous flux (N*Ф): 1400lm, we will understand how many lights we need and why is this light through the most basic formula

Here are some recommendations for lamps to help illuminate your interior and give your space a more design-oriented look.
